Paint Coverage for Touch Up Pen, Brush, and ComboUpdated 7 months ago

This document guides understanding of the coverage expected from TouchUpDirect Touch Up Size Applicators, including the Pen, Brush, and Combo.  The document covers Primer, Waterborne Color, and Clearcoat.

Primer:  One applicator of TouchUpDirect Touch Up Primer will cover approximately 21 square inches.  This is with 2 coats of primer applied with proper coverage.  The applicator had plenty of fluid left for an additional coat(s) if needed.  The Panel in Fig. 1 is unpainted.  The primer fully covers all panel areas and is ready for sanding.

Colorcoat: One applicator of TouchUpDirect Colorcoat will yield approximately 14 square inches of coverage.  NOTE:  Coverage varies immensely dependent on color.  Please take a look at the guide below.  The color used in Fig 2 is the Ford Cyber Orange basecoat.  This is one of the poorest covering colors in our catalog.  It required 3 coats to cover the 14 square inches on the panel.

Coverage Guide:

  • Yellows, oranges, and light greens or light blues offer the least coverage and should be expected to yield 12-14 square inches per applicator of color.  Generally, 3 coats are required.
  • Bright reds, whites, and solid (non-metallic) grays offer medium coverage and should be expected to yield 14-17 square inches per applicator.  Generally, 3 coats are required.
  • Blacks, dark blues, dark grays, silvers, and dark greens, offer the best coverage and should be expected to yield 17-21 square inches per applicator.  Generally, 2-3 coats are required.

Clearcoat:  One applicator of TouchUpDirect Clearcoat will yield approximately 15 square inches of coverage.  Generally, 2 coats of Clearcoat are required.  More than 3 coats are not recommended to avoid excessive film build.  Figure 3 is 15 square inches of Clearcoat coverage with 2 coats.  Figure 3 shows a properly Clearcoated panel.
