TouchUpDirect Professional Waterborne Primer Tech SheetUpdated 6 days ago

TouchUpDirect Waterborne Primer is a multi-surface primer-surfacer. This market-leading 1K waterborne technology is ideal for spot repairs and larger surfaces.

Please note that all of our TouchUpDirect Professional Primer is pre-reduced and ready to spray. Thoroughly hand stir before application.


Preparation of Substrate:

  • Wash the area to be painted with soap and water, then use TouchUpDirect Wax and Grease Remover.

  • Sand the bare metal areas completely with 180-220 grit abrasive and clean.

  • Glass reinforced plastic (GRP), fiberglass, and body filler use 180-220 grit

abrasives and clean.

  • E-coat must be thoroughly sanded with 180-220 grit abrasive and cleaned.

  • Aluminum substrates must be primed within 8 hours of sanding and cleaning.


Spray Gun Set-up and Pressure:   

  • HVLP: 10 psi at the cap

  • Compliant: 29-40 psi at the gun

  • Fluid Tip: 1.4-1.8 mm


Application:

  • Apply: 3-5 wet coats

  • Film Build: 0.8-1.0 mils per coat

Note: For optimal performance with spray application, the minimum dry film thickness must be approximately 2 mils after sanding over bare metal areas.


Flash Off at 70°F (21°C):  

  • Between Coats: Dry wet film until the surface is dried to a matte finish. Approximately 5-10 minutes.  


Drying Times:

  • Dry to Handle: Immediately after the surface becomes uniformly

matte in appearance.

  • Dry to Sand: Approximately 30 minutes after the final coat is uniformly matte in appearance. 70°F (21°C) High humidity and low temperature may adversely affect dry times.

Note: When sanded TouchUpDirect Waterborne Primer stands for more than 24 hours, it must be lightly scuff sanded and re-cleaned before top coating.


Equipment Cleaning:

All spray equipment should be cleaned after each use with a Waterborne Gun Cleaner.


Storage and Handling:

Store in a cool, dry place away from sources of heat.  Avoid exposure to frost or freezing conditions.
